Internet Glossary

We Offer Solutions

Glossary of Basic Internet terms:

Autoresponder

An autoresponder is a program or script on a mail server that automatically replies to e-mails. Though it is run from the mail server, an autoresponder is set up by us for you through a Web-based interface. For example, a company might set up an autoresponder for their support e-mail address to let users know they have received their support requests. The automated reply might read something like, "Thank you, we have received your message. One of our technicians will attempt to answer your question within 24 hours."

You may also use autoresponders to let people know when you are away from your computer and won't be able to respond to any e-mails for awhile. For example, you might set up an autoresponder for your personal e-mail address to say, "Sorry, I am on vacation in the Bahamas indefinitely. I'll respond to your message whenever I decide to come back." Of course, it is important to reply to messages even after the autoresponder has sent a response. After all, most people like to communicate with other people rather than computers. If you wish an autoresponder, please contact. While other web hosting companies charge for autoresponders, Wire Grafix includes them at no charge to you.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth refers to how much data you can send through a network or modem connection. It is usually measured in bits per second, or "bps." You can think of bandwidth as a highway with cars traveling on it. The highway is the network connection and the cars are the data. The wider the highway, the more cars can travel on it at one time. Therefore more cars can get to their destinations faster. The same principle applies to computer data -- the more bandwidth, the more information that can be transferred within a given amount of time. In practical terms, your web site uses bandwidth anytime a person is on your web site. Videos or audio file use up lots of bandwidth.

Browser

Computer program that allows to search the World Wide Web and displays the content of the web pages. Examples are Mosaic, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera and Internet Explorer.

Domain Name

This is the name that identifies a Web site. For example, "microsoft.com" is the domain name of Microsoft's Web site. A single Web server can serve Web sites for multiple domain names, but a single domain name can point to only one machine. For example, Apple Computer has Web sites at www.apple.com, www.info.apple.com, and store.apple.com. Each of these sites could be served on different machines.

Every domain must be registered with Internic and there is a yearly fee for this registration. This allows you ownership and use of this domain. To use the domain it must be “hosted”. Just registering the domain name does not get your web site seen on the internet. For this you must have your web site files "hosted". Read More>>

When somebody enters your domain name into their browser's address field, the IP address is located and Web site is loaded onto your computer screen.

You'll have to pay a monthly fee that varies depending on how much disk space and bandwidth your site will use. We bill in advance by the quarter. Web Page

Web pages are what make up the World Wide Web. These documents are written in HTML (hypertext markup language) and are translated by your Web browser. Web pages can either be static or dynamic. Static pages show the same content each time they are viewed. Dynamic pages have content that can change each time they are accessed. These pages are typically written in scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, ASP, or JSP. The scripts in the pages run functions on the server that return things like the date and time, and database information. All the information is returned as HTML code, so when the page gets to your browser, all the browser has to do is translate the HTML.

Please note that a Web page is not the same thing as a Web site. A Web site is a collection of pages. A Web page is an individual HTML document.
